The county is located at the Geographic Center of the 48 States and is rich with history including The Old Dutch Mill in Smith Center and the birthplace of Home on the Range at the Dr. Brewster Higley Cabin.

For thousands of years this area was sacred hunting ground for Pawnee Indians as they tracked thunderous herds of Bison on the great plains of North Central Kansas. In 1853, one of the largest Plains Indian battles in US history took place south of the estate when Cheyenne and allied tribes attacked the Kitkahaki Pawnee who were buffalo hunting along the Beaver Creek. Many artifacts and remnants from the battle and the Pawnee who lived in the area can still be found in the area today.
